Annie’s Apple Pudding

1 - 1 1/3 cup sugar (depends on tartness of apples)
2/3 cup shortening
2 eggs, beaten
6 cups peeled, chopped apples
1 cup chopped pecan or walnuts
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. Fold in chopped apples and nuts. Sift together baking soda, spices, and flour, and add to apple mixture. Spread mixture into greased 9x13-inch pan and pour following Sauce over the top.

Stir together sugar and flour, then add remainder of ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil and boil gently for 3 minutes, stirring often. Pour this hot Sauce over the batter. Do not stir. Bake at 325° for 1 hour.
