Raisin Nut Nibbles

1 cup water
2 cups raisins
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup vegetable shortening
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 eggs
3 1/2 cups flour, stirred and measured
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup pecans chopped


In small saucepan combine water and raisins bring to boil, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes. Cool stir in soda set aside. Cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in vanilla and eggs. Stir in raisin mixture. Add sifted dry ingredients and nuts drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets, allowing room for cookies to spread. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 10 minutes or until barely done. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
