Fun Fact: In early 1861, representatives from six of the states that had seceded from the Union gathered in Montgomery to form the government of the Confederate States of America, with Montgomery as the capital. On April 11, 1861, the telegraph was sent from the Winter Building in downtown Montgomery that ordered the fire on Fort Sumter, thus beginning the Civil War.
