Caramel Layer Choco-Squares

Ingredients

1 (16-ounce) package light caramels
2/3 cup evaporated milk, divided
1 (18 1/4-ounce) box German chocolate cake mix
2/3 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 (12-ounce) package chocolate chips

Directions:

In a heavy saucepan, melt caramels in 1/3 cup milk over low heat; set aside. In a large bowl, combine remaining ingredients, except chocolate chips. Mix until dough is crumbly but holds together. Press half the dough into a greased and floured 9x13-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 6 minutes. Remove from oven. Sprinkle chocolate chips over dough. Pour caramel mixture over chips. Top with remaining dough. Bake 15–20 minutes. Chill. Cut into squares.
