___ cup vegetable shortening
_ pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-1/2 inch cubes
_ cups water
_ cups onions, chopped
_ cloves garlic, minced
_ teaspoon salt
In a large pot, brown beef cubes in melted shortening, one portion at a time, until browned on all sides; drain. Return meat to pot and add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 1-1/2 to 2 hours or until meat is tender. Cover and chill. When cool, skim fat from surface and package stew into three 1-quart freezer containers or bags. Seal, label, and freeze.
