Preheat oven to 375° F. In a medium bowl mix flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves set aside.
In a large mixer bowl at high speed beat sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and molasses. Add flour mixture and beat at low speed until well blended.
Form into 1-inch balls and dip tops into sugar. Place sugar-side up on ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool cookies on wire racks.
