Dorothy's Raisin Bars

1 cup raisins
3/4 cup apple juice
2 tablespoons shortening
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 Optional: 1/4 cup chopped nuts


In a small saucepan over low heat, bring raisins, apple juice and shortening to a boil. Remove from heat and cool. Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl; stir in raisin mixture. Pour into a greased 8"x8" baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes; remove from oven and cool. Cut into 2-inch squares; store in an airtight container.
