Flatulence, commonly known as intestinal gas, can result from eating beans. Gas is caused by the digestive system’s inability to digest the complex sugars found in beans.

You can reduce this effect by draining the soaking liquid used to hydrate dried beans before cooking or by rinsing and draining canned beans. In case you were wondering, minimal nutrition is lost by draining dried or canned beans.

You may also want to check out the over-the-counter products available in liquid and tablet form to help minimize gas.

When adding more beans to your diet, add them gradually over a period of several weeks to allow your digestive system time to adjust. Sudden consumption of large amounts of beans can cause bloating and gas.
