Fun Fact: Mont Saint-Michel, a Forgotten Wonder of the Medieval World, is a rocky tidal island off the northwestern coast of France. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of the nearby town of Avranches, in 708 AD and instructed him to build a church there. The bishop repeatedly ignored the angel’s instruction until Michael burned a hole in the bishop’s skull with his finger. In the 8th century AD, it became the seat of the Saint-Michel monastery, from which it draws the name. The commune living on the island has a population of 41 as of 2006.
