Caramel Layer Choco-Squares

1 (14-ounce) package caramels
2/3 cup evaporated milk, divided
1 (18 1/4-ounce) box German chocolate cake mix
2/3 cup softened butter
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 (12-ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips


In a heavy saucepan, melt unwrapped caramels in 1/3 cup of milk over low heat; set aside. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, butter, and nuts. Mix until dough is crumbly, but holds together. Press 1/2 the dough into a greased and floured 9x13-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 6 minutes. Remove from oven. Sprinkle chocolate chips over dough. Pour caramel mixture over chips. Top with remaining dough. Bake for 15–20 minutes. Chill.
