Date Squares

Ingredients

Filling:
1 1/4 cups dates pitted
1/2 cup water
* See note below.
3/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup unbleached flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups oats old-fashioned

Directions:

* Combine dates and water in saucepan and cook over medium heat stir to mash dates. When uniformly soft, remove from heat and cool. Topping: Heat oven to 350°. Cream butter or margarine and brown sugar until creamy. Blend in remaining ingredients except oats. Fold in oats. Press 1/2 mixture into bottom of well greased and floured 8-inch square baking pan. Spread date mixture over crumb mixture. Top with remaining crumb mixture. Bake 30 minutes or until top is browned. Cool slightly and cut into bars. Remove when cold.
