Ingredients

MEATBALLS
1 pound ground beef chuck
1 medium yellow onion minced
1 egg
3/4 cup bread crumbs
1/3 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon cumin
dash cinnamon
salt to taste
white pepper to taste
SAUCE
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic minced
1 1/2 cups tomato purée
1 cup water
1/4 cup cider vinegar or red wine vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon oregano
2 bay leaves
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
bread from the hollowed out bowl cut into chunks
1 to 1 3/4 pound Bread Bowl

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly oil a baking sheet and set aside.

2. To make the meatballs, place the ground chuck, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl and mix until smooth and well-blended. Form the mixture into meatballs the size of ping-pong balls, and arrange on the baking sheet.

3. Bake the meatballs for 10 minutes. Turn them over, and continue to bake an additional 10 minutes, or until they are cooked through completely. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

4. While the meatballs bake, prepare the sauce. Place the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and sauté about 1 minute or until it browns. Remove the garlic with a slotted spoon and discard.

5. Add the purée, water, vinegar, sugar, oregano, and bay leaves to the saucepan. Simmer for 25 minutes while stirring occasionally. Remove and discard the bay leaves. Carefully add the cooled meatballs to the sauce and continue to simmer another 10 minutes.

6. Transfer the warm meatballs and sauce to the bread bowl, and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Spoon portions onto individual plates and eat with forks. Serve with pieces of sourdough bread.
