Caramel Frosting

   1/3 cup butter or margarine
   1 cup brown sugar packed
   1/4 cup milk
   1/8 teaspoon salt
   1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
   1 1/2 cups powdered sugar sifted


In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt butter or margarine. Add brown sugar. Stirring constantly, cook for 2 minutes. Add milk and salt and continue stirring until mixture comes to a boil. Without stirring, boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and cool until bottom of saucepan is warm, not hot.

Stir in vanilla. With a spoon, gradually beat in powdered sugar and continue beating until mixture is smooth and of spreading consistency.
