Spicy Apple Bread

1 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons margarine or butter, softened
3 cups bread flour
1/3 cup cut-up dried apple
2 tablespoons dry milk powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice
2 teaspoons bread machine or quick active dry yeast


Make 1 Pound Recipe with bread machines that use at least 2 cups flour, or make 1 1/2 Pound Recipe with bread machines that use at least 3 cups flour.

Measure carefully, placing all ingredients in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer.

Select Sweet or Basic/White cycle. Use Medium or Light crust color. Remove baked bread from pan, and cool on wire rack.

1 slice: 150 calories (20 calories from fat) 2g fat (0g saturated) 0mg cholesterol 320mg sodium 30g carbohydrate (1g dietary fiber) 4g protein.

If your bread machine has a 2-pound vertical pan, the loaf will be short, but still will have good texture and flavor. If your bread machine has a horizontal pan, however, there isn't enough dough to make a good loaf of baked bread.

Try This
If you are out of apple pie spice, you can make your own mixture. For 1 ½ teaspoons, use ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon ground allspice, and ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg.

Sandwich Board
Start the day off with a slice of warm toasted spicy apple bread generously spread with Honey Peanut Butter Spread. Mix 3-ounce package of softened cream cheese with 2 tablespoons milk until smooth and creamy, Stir in ¼ cup crunchy peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of honey. This makes about 2/3 cup of spread, so cover and refrigerate any leftovers. It will be ready when you want another peanutty treat!
