Fun Fact: Seventy square miles make up the District of Columbia. Designed by Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant around 1791, it was the first American city planned for a specific purpose and became the nation’s capital in 1891. The country had been governed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, previously. Both Virginia and Maryland donated part of their land for the capital district. The Virginia portion of DC was later ceded back to Virginia.
