Overnight Apple-French Toast

Ingredients

1 cup brown sugar
8 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
3 tart apples such as Granny Smith, peeled and sliced
1 loaf French bread
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Apple Syrup:
1 cup applesauce
1 (10-ounce) jar apple jelly
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 Dash of salt

Directions:

Cook sugar, butter, and corn syrup at low temperature until thick. Pour into a 9x13x2-inch baking dish sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, or buttered well. Place apple slices on top. Cut bread in 1/4-inch slices and place on top of apples, pressing bread together tightly. Whisk together remaining ingredients and pour over bread; cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered 40 minutes in 350° oven. Serve hot with Apple Syrup.

Apple Syrup:
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until apple jelly melts and is consistency of syrup.

Note: The French toast can be prepared ahead and freezes well.
