Smoothies have traditionally been known more for their unique combination of flavors and textures than for their appearance. But when trying to reinvent a smoothie as a seductive cocktail or dessert, a well-chosen garnish can magically create something visually grand out of an otherwise simple combination of ingredients. Whether you choose a basic garnish, such as Berries on a Skewer, or a more elaborate embellishment, such as a Cinnamon Pirouette, to adorn your smoothie, the added colors and shapes can result in an impressive creation that is striking in appearance. What's more, most of these garnishes are exceptionally delicious themselves. In this chapter, you will find a host of novel ideas for creating garnishes to add a sublimely decadent touch to your sinful smoothies. Most are not very complicated to make. You can choose to make many garnishes well in advance, and some can even be kept frozen, so you can have a ready supply available for an instant smoothie celebration. On the other hand, if you don't have the time or inclination to make your own garnishes, consider picking up some fun accessories at your neighborhood party store, such as multicolored and uniquely shaped straws, cocktail umbrellas, brightly colored metallic sparklers, paper flowers, or fancy swizzle sticks.
