Speedy Sauerbraten

2 pounds beef round steaks, sliced 1/2-inch thick
1 tablespoon oil
2 packages brown gravy mix
3 cups water
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 cup red wine vinegar (not balsamic)
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 bay leaves
ground black pepper, to taste


Brown the meat in the oil. Remove meat and set aside. Add gravy mixes and the water to the pan and bring to a boil making sure to get up all the brown bits on the bottom of the pan. Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer for 5 minutes. Place browned meat in bottom of 12-inch Dutch oven, and pour sauce on top. Bake until meat is tender and sauce is thickened, approximately 2 hours.
