I Double Dare You to Make This Oreo Ice Cream!

I tell you what. Apparently the thing I needed the most to get out of a day-to-day cooking rut of weeknight meals was to stay a few days with my older, wiser sister. I stayed with her 3 nights on my recent visit up to see family and I have already made all 3 of her easy dinners and 1 dessert recipe she made while I was there. A big sister is always there to help and offer wisdom, no matter how old you are :)

One hot afternoon she offered to make homemade Oreo ice cream. Absolutely! Who would ever say no to that?! Then she threw in the bold statement claiming this THE BEST ice cream ever!!!! I answered sweetly that I was excited to try and and see but I {a little bit smugly} thought to myself that there was no way this could beat some of my tried and true homemade ice cream recipes I use all the time. Because of my daughter’s food allergies I make homemade ice cream pretty regularly so I could be a good judge if there was a new champion recipe to be had.

She also claims that it is even better after it’s been in the freezer overnight. Wait….what?!?! Homemade ice cream ALWAYS tastes better right when it’s done in the ice maker when it’s all soft and yummy….right? That’s always been my experience. I thought my sister might be getting a little carried away with her bold claims.

I looked at her recipe and it has some interesting ingredients in it including sour cream and evaporated milk. But whatever the concoction, this truly is a fabulous homemade ice cream recipe! I made it for some friends and we all loved it so much!

And you know what? My sister was so right that it freezes really well. My family can attest to that since we’ve been eating ice cream cones non-stop made with this ice cream the last couple weeks. It doesn’t have any ice crystals like homemade ice cream can have sometimes. It has the same texture as store bought ice cream.

The recipe kind of has a vanilla base and then you add in whatever toppings you want in the last 15 minutes of your ice cream maker magic time. I’ve only had crushed up Oreos in it but I would love to try adding fresh strawberries or trying the hot fudge that is recommended (recipe also included).

Now I’m sure I’m getting some doubts from some of you as well, just like I was skeptical but I double dare you to make this ice cream recipe and see if it will be your new go-to homemade ice cream like it has become mine! :)
