Parmesan Steamed Onions


Serves: 5

Ingredients

1/4 cup margarine
5 medium onions, sliced 1/4 inch thick
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 cup cooking sherry or white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese

Directions:

Place margarine into wok or fry pan; heat to 225° until margarine melts. Separate onions into rings. Add onions, salt, pepper, and sugar; stir. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir every 5 minutes. Add cooking sherry or wine vinegar
and cheese. Increase heat to 300°. Stir gently and cook for 3 minutes. Reduce heat to warm for serving.


Fun Fact: Only onions grown in the Walla Walla Valley of southeast Washington and northeast Oregon can be called Walla Walla Sweet Onions, as protected by a Federal marketing order designating Walla Walla Sweet Onions as a unique variety and establishing a specific growing area for the crop.
