Caramel-Cream Cheese Apple Bars

Ingredients

Pastry:
3 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 stick plus 2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup cooking oil
1 egg
1/4 cup water

Apple Filling:
5 cups sliced, peeled apples
1/4 cup flour
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup sugar

Cream Cheese Topping:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
------------------------------
Caramel Topping:
1/2 pound caramels
1/4 cup cream or canned milk

Directions:

Pastry:
Combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in butter and mix well. In separate bowl blend together oil, egg, and water. Blend both mixtures together and form into a square. Place on 17x11-inch piece of foil that has been sprayed with Pam. Roll Pastry to fit foil and place on cookie sheet. Flute edges of crust.

Apple Filling:
Place all ingredients in mixing bowl and blend well. Spread Apple Filling evenly over Pastry.

Cream Cheese Topping:
Blend all ingredients together except walnuts and whip until smooth. Set aside.

Caramel Topping:
Combine milk and caramels in double boiler. Heat until caramels melt and are blended with milk. Spread a portion of Cream Cheese Topping in a 1 1/2-inch wide strip the length of the Pastry. Spread a portion of the caramel in the same manner next to the cream cheese. Continue this alternating pattern until the entire top of the Apple Filling is covered. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Bake at 375° for 35 minutes. Let cool and cut into squares to serve.
