Pepper Cookies

Ingredients

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar
1 egg slightly beaten
2 1/4 cups flour, stirred and measured
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/ 2 teaspoon cloves ground
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

In medium saucepan combine sugar, corn syrup, butter, and vinegar bring almost to boiling point, then cool to room temperature. Stir in egg. Add sifted dry ingredients, blending well. Cover refrigerate several hours or overnight. Divide dough into two portions, keeping each part chilled until time to roll out. Roll dough very thinly on floured board. Cut into desired shapes. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees F. for 7 to 8 minutes or until barely browned. Remove from baking sheet immediately. Cool. Store in loosely covered container so cookies will remain crisp. Makes 8 dozen 3-inch cookies.
Note: Recipe can be doubled. Divide dough into four portions keep three portions refrigerated while rolling out fourth.
