Disney Adventures: Ichabod and Mr. Toad

This week’s adventure came from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Two classic stories in one movie. Mr. Toad did not have many foods, although we did see tea and crumpets. Tea and crumpets are one of my favorite things, and I’m not even British! Sleepy Time herbal tea at the end of the day with a spoonful of honey always hits the spot. Nothing could be better for you when you’re sick. Crumpets are a bit like sweet biscuits, more commonly described as griddle cakes. They go great with butter and jam.

Ichabod Crane is a food addict, if I’ve ever seen one. He’s a tall, lanky man who comes to the town of sleepy hollow to become a teacher. He falls for a pretty girl with a pretty amount of money, but is eventually run out of town by his own silly superstitions after hearing the story of the headless horseman. Was the headless horseman more than just a tale, though? Ichabod saw him.

Throughout the story Ichabod is downing food like a garbage disposal. Whole chickens, cakes, pies, sandwiches… He always has a plate full of food on his lap or next to him. We had another feast this week! In fact we had another feast so big that we had to split it up over a couple of days. There were at least 3 hams shown throughout. A turkey, and a couple of chickens. Also possibly some roast quail. There was a mystery purple blob that, after some research, we came to realize was most likely summer pudding. There were also 4 or 5 different cakes shown. Luckily, we’ve made cakes and pies for other movies, so we didn’t have to make everything we saw. We also only made one ham and one turkey. Luckily some friends of ours were willing to come help us eat.

The summer pudding was one of my favorite dishes this week. Probably because I was so pleasantly surprised by it. It’s a British-based recipe using bread, berries, and a bit of sugar. It’s like berry bread pudding! You soak day old white bread in the berry juice, line some molds with it, fill it with the berry/sugar mixture, top it off with another juice soaked piece of bread then put it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours with a weight on top of it. Is that easy or what? It’s pretty healthy for a dessert, too.

I made a red velvet cake from scratch, which turned out pretty good. It was 3 layers tall though, and we had a hard time figuring out how to cover it without ruining the frosting. Another problem I’ve found with doing the movies in chronological order like we do, is that when movies like Ichabod are set in the fall, the food isn’t in season anymore because we are in spring. However I think it just adds more adventure to our food journey, because it’s sometimes a journey just to find a food item or two around town. Example: Chestnuts and pumpkins are near impossible to find right now.

You can visit the blog, disneymeals.wordpress.com for the full feast. Stay tuned for next week, we’re finally hitting the princess classics again. Cinderella is up next! A French-based fairytale featuring pumpkins, glass slippers, and fairy godmothers. It also features some delicious looking breakfast food.
