Fun Picnic Ideas

By Camille Rhoades

Who doesn’t love a picnic? The simple activity can hold excitement for children, romanticism for adults, and fun for everyone! A picnic is one of the best ways to add excitement to any meal.  Of course, a picnic doesn’t always mean sitting oat the park. There are a ton of unique ways to take your picnic to the next level.

Night Picnics
As simple as it sounds. Just load up the picnic basket and set out after the sun goes down. A night picnic adds romance and excitement that can often be absent from day picnics.   It's also a great way to beat the heat during the summer.  Of course, make sure to bring tiki torches, candles, or a lantern to illuminate your meal.

Destination Picnics
No reason to always go to the same park. You know that really cool City Hall? Or maybe that historic site you find so interesting? Any place like that can make a unique picnic spot. As long as there is a nice place to sit, you could enjoy some unique scenery – and maybe even learn a thing or two about the destination you chose!

Water Picnics
Few things are as enjoyable as a picnic consumed while floating down a river or while in the middle of a lake.  Grab a waterproof picnic backpack and fill it up with delicious food for your next boating adventure.  Whether you're yachting on the Atlantic or canoeing through a local bayou, a picnic on the water always hits the spot.

Urban Picnics
A picnic set amidst the concrete and bustle of a city is truly something special. Urban picnics can take place in a variety settings. Rooftops, balconies, and waterfronts are favorite destinations. Empty parking lots and the tops of parking garages are also cool spots to grab a bite and relax.

Home Picnics
If you don’t have time to get out you can have some fun with a picnic at home. Whether in the yard or on the family room floor my kids think a picnic at home is a blast too. Pizza by candlelight or sandwiches with the whole family can be as fun at home as they can be anywhere else.

Winter Picnics
Just because the trees have shed their leaves doesn't mean you have to keep the picnic basket in storage. As long as you have the proper gear and a willing companion, a winter picnic can be an unforgettable experience. A thermos full of hot cocoa will make it all the more enjoyable.

Beach Picnics
Perfect for the summer or any day of the year, beach picnics are always a great time.  Nothing beats watching the waves while scarfing down a delicious meal, especially if you've worked up an appetite after swimming in the surf. A good picnic blanket is crucial for beach picnics, as sand can be a terrible nuisance.

And if it is summer, you'll be able to cool off with a swim after the meal as well.. Just be sure to wait half an hour before jumping in!

Surprise Picnics
Surprise your spouse by showing up at work with a picnic basket! Regardless of where you set up the picnic it is sure to be a fun surprise and a great memory.
