Picante Chili

Ingredients

1 large onion, chopped
2 tablespoons oil or butter
1 pound steak, cut into cubes
1 pound ground beef
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (28-ounce) can tomato
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro or parsley
1 cup hot picante sauce (or to taste)
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1 ounce Mexican chocolate, grated (or baking chocolate with 1 teaspoon sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon)
1 - 1 1/2 cup grated Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese (optional)

Directions:

Brown onion in oil or butter in large skillet until soft. Transfer to crockpot. Brown cubed steak and ground beef, a little at a time, in same skillet. Transfer to crockpot.

Combine remaining ingredients and simmer until chocolate melts. Add to crockpot and mix well. Cook for 7–10 hours on LOW setting. Serve with cornbread and a green or fruit salad.

Note: Transports well in the crockpot and will stay hot for several hours.
