Danish Apple Bars

Ingredients

Crust:
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg, separated
1 milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon hot water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients for Crust. Cut in shortening as for pie crust. Mix egg yolk plus milk, to equal 2/3 cup liquid; add vanilla. Combine with dry ingredients. Divide dough in half. Roll out to fit a 12x15-inch pan. Over top of dough, sprinkle cornflakes and a layer of apples. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Roll out rest of dough and put on top; moisten edges and seal well. Beat egg white, brush on top. Bake at 400° for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° and bake 35–40 minutes. Mix Glaze ingredients. Drizzle over the top of warm bars.
