Year of Disney: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (With Recipes!)

In 2019, my family planned a trip to Disneyland. During our preparation, we realized there are so many classic Disney movies our children have not seen! We decided we wanted to do a “Year of Disney”- dedicate a night each week to watching a classic animated Disney movie, starting with Snow White! (And yes, it will technically take a little longer than a year… but for some reason that name has stuck around our house, so we’re going with it!).

As we thought more about this idea, my husband and I got really excited. We actually put it off because we wanted to collect all the movies and really make it a big experience. We have hunted in thrift stores, searched online, and have almost completed our collection. We also finished our basement in December, so we have a nice big movie room to enjoy our shows! And of course, half the fun for me would be preparing food to go along with the theme- it’s not a party without food, especially when it goes along with the movie!

If you’ve been around for awhile, you may remember one of our other newsletter writers doing something similar- she actually has a blog dedicated to each Disney classic, showing all the food that you can find in each film. It’s a great resource, and I’ll list it in the sources below!

However, I’m doing something a little different. I want to make it a goal to serve a meal with each movie, keeping in theme as much as possible. I also have young kids, and I want them to be excited and actually eat the food I make! Each meal is going to look very different, and I’m so excited for the challenge! We also decided to invite my in-laws to the party, because they love being part of this kind of stuff- and it will help hold us accountable so that we actually follow through!

Of course, we started with Snow White. I had grand ideas in my head of making everything look nice, setting it out with themed place cards and decorations- but at the end of the day, I’m 11 weeks pregnant with number 6, we are potty training a puppy- and I’m just proud of myself for doing it! Sometimes we let ourselves get too caught up in the details- it doesn’t have to be pretty to be fun ;).

On the menu (and please excuse my poor pictures!)

7 Dwarf Soup (from a darling Disney children’s cookbook we own- it was perfect for our meal!). I’ve included the recipe at the bottom of the article!

There are so many ideas out there for apples that are sweet, so I was really excited to come across this idea for something a little healthier! And they were delicious. Probably the most popular item of the night! I included the recipe for this one as well! We also had a green salad, which we called “Haunted Forest Salad”.

For dessert, we had jello “gems” from the dwarves’ mine, and apple pie!

I realize that Snow White actually makes a gooseberry pie. But I took advice from the evil queen herself: “It’s apple pie that makes the men’s mouths water”. My husband LOVES apple pie, so I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to make his favorite. But we still dedicated it to Grumpy!

And I’m a little embarrassed to show these… but here are my poison apples haha. The chocolate seized on me and ended up being chunky instead of deliciously drippy… but my kids were still super excited and definitely had no problem eating them!

We had SO much fun eating our themed meal and then watching Snow White! It’s been several years since we’ve watched this particular one, and I forgot just how funny and cute and well-done it is! It’s a classic for a reason.

I’m thrilled to finally be doing our Year of Disney, and I’d love for you to join the ride! I’ll keep you updated on our meals, and of course include plenty of pictures and recipes!

Caprese "Apples" with Balsamic Sauce

Ingredients:
Sauce
2 cups balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar

30 cherry tomatoes
30 cubes mozzarella cheese
handful of, fresh basil leaves
toothpicks

Directions:
For the sauce, mix balsamic vinegar with brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer until glaze is reduced by half, about 20 minutes. Glaze should coat the back of a spoon. Let cool.

Cut the cherry tomatos in half. Place one half on a toothpick, followed by a mozzerella cube, the other half, and a small piece of basil. Serve with the balsmaic glaze. You can drizzle on top or allow guests to serve themselves.

Store leftover glaze in the fridge.

Seven Dwarf Soup

Made with 7 ingredients- one for each dwarf!

Ingredients:
1 carrot
2 stalks celery
1 cooked chicken breast, cut into small pieces (about 1 cup)
1/2 cup uncooked ditalini, or similar pasta
salt
pepper

Directions:
1. Peel the carrot and cut it into thin slices. Prepare your celery stalks by slicing off the leafy tops and white bottoms. Cut the remaining stalks into thin slices.

2. Combine the chicken broth, carrot slices, and celery slices in a large saucepan. Cook over high heat until the broth begins to bubble. Turn the heat down to low and let simmer for 3 minutes.

3. Stir in the chicken and pasta. Continue simmering the soup until the pasta is cooked al dente (about 10 more minutes).

4. Season the soup with salt and pepper, and serve.

*I like to add extra carrots, celery, and pasta. And more chicken if I have it!
