Homemade Butterbeer 4 Ways!

It’s almost the end of July, and if you’re a nerd like me, you know what that means….. ;). July 31 is Harry Potter’s birthday, so naturally, that calls for a little celebrating, right? And nothing is more perfect for a Harry Potter celebration than a little bit of butterbeer!

If you’re unfamiliar with butterbeer- it’s basically a delicious wizarding staple in the world of Harry Potter. You can drink it steaming, hot and foaming from the mug or you can get an ice cold butterbeer to cool down- but it’s always painted as delicious and perfect to satisfy your cravings, sorrows, etc. ;)

Did you know that you can actually get an official butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? It’s not just called butterbeer- it’s been approved by J.K. Rowling herself! The creator is Chef Steve Jayson, the Corporate Executive Chef for Universal Parks & Resorts.

Apparently he spent 3 YEARS creating the perfect recipe. He began by watching all the movies and reading the books, and then he and his team traveled to Europe to become better acquainted with the atmosphere surrounding this beloved series. Coming up with the perfect recipe was probably challenging because there really are no specific descriptions in the books! Though this flavorful beverage is mentioned several times throughout the books (and movies), you don’t really get any more specific details other than it’s one of the most delicious things that Harry ever tastes.

After several different experimentations, a recipe was finally decided on, and all it needed was the final approval from the author herself. Jayson and his team flew to the U.K. and whipped up their final recipe- along with 4 other distractors. They had Rowling sample each one, and when she got to the “real” one, she took one sip and “broke into a big smile, saying, “Yes, Chef. That’s it.”’

I’ve never had the privilege of tasting this supposedly incredible butterbeer, but there are plenty of copycat recipes on the internet, and I’ve perused them and found what I thought to be a couple of the the best! They all claim to be the best of course, but these ones seemed to be recommended by more than one person as being close to the “original” butterbeer, or they just looked unique and delicious! I guess I’ll let you decide which is your favorite!
