Go for the Greek!

Have you jumped on the Greek yogurt train? When I first heard about Greek yogurt, I figured it was just another health fad. Then my mom started buying it, and my kids started eating it and loving it, and I figured maybe it was time to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was, and I have to admit that I think I have jumped on board the Greek yogurt fad.

So just why is Greek yogurt a thing? And why is it associated with weight loss? Is there some magic ingredient that will help you lose all the inches? No, but there’s definitely a reason so many health nuts go for the Greek!

While yogurt can be a great source of probiotics (which help your digestive system and can boost your immune system), they are also typically packed with sugar. They’re not always the most low-fat or low-calorie, and many contain high fructose corn syrup, which is even worse for you than regular sugar. However, they are a tasty way to get calcium, protein, and probiotics...

And this is why Greek yogurt really does stand out. While regular yogurt is packed with sugars and a little lower on the protein side, Greek yogurt generally has much fewer carbs, less sodium, and is packed with protein! This makes it the perfect post-workout snack, or a tasty dessert with minimal calories. It’s a great way to feel full and curb your sweet cravings!

It’s strained more thoroughly, creating a denser texture that can also make it a great substitute for mayonnaise, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. Greek yogurt also has less lactose because of the way it’s made, which makes it a more tolerable option for those who are more lactose intolerant.

But it’s important to note that not all Greek yogurts are created equal! When shopping for Greek yogurt, you definitely want to pay attention to the nutrition label. Some have way more calories and carbs while lacking in protein, and some brands can contain up to 3 times the amount of fat in regular yogurt! Pay attention to the list of ingredients as well; Greek yogurt is made through a special straining process, but some brands create Greek yogurt knock-offs by adding cornstarch or other thickeners to mimic the same texture. Basically, when deciding which Greek yogurt to buy, you really need to pay attention to the nutrition label and ingredients. Your best bet in general is to get unsweetened Greek yogurt that you can flavor with your own fruit or honey.

So here’s what it boils down to: Greek yogurt is tasty, and you get all the benefits of yogurt (calcium, probiotics, protein) without the extra fluff and with added nutrition! (potassium, iodine, etc). If you haven’t tried it yet, it may be time for you to go for the Greek!

Have you tried Greek yogurt, and if so, what did you think? I’d love to hear!
