Bet You Didn’t Know This About America’s Favorite Cookie

It’s been over 100 years since the birth of America’s favorite cookie—the one and only Oreo. Can you believe it?? Oreos have been around for a long time! Since 1912 to be exact. And boy have they come a long ways. I’m sure you have noticed as you stroll down the cookie aisle at your local grocery store but there are about a million and three different flavors of Oreos now, some of which are better than others. How many flavors of Oreos would you say have ever been created? I will share the answer in just a bit.

For now, I would love to share a few fun facts about milk’s favorite cookie.

The name is a mystery. No one can confirm the true origin of the word “Oreo.” Some believe it was derived from the French word for gold, “or,” because its original packaging was mostly gold. Others have offered the hypothesis that it comes from the Greek word for mountain, perhaps because the test version of the cookie had a hill-like shape.

71% to 29% is the cookie-to-creme ratio of an original Oreo cookie.

The Double Stuf Oreo was introduced in 1974. And if Double Stuf isn’t enough for you—they now have a Mega Stuf Oreo!

The original recipe called for pork fat. That’s right, lard was once a key ingredient in that delicious creme filling.

Two versions debuted in 1912. The options were original and lemon meringue. The original was far more popular, and Nabisco discontinued lemon meringue in the 1920s.

They’re sold in more than 100 countries. In terms of sales, the top five are the U.S., China, Venezuela, Canada and Indonesia. In some countries, like China, Nabisco’s parent company, Kraft, reformulated the recipe to appeal to consumers, such as China making a green tea Oreo cookie and Argentina making an Oreo Duo featuring banana and dulce de leche.

450 billion. That’s how many Oreo cookies have been sold worldwide since they hit the market in 1912.

381. That’s the approximate number of times all the Oreos ever manufactured could circle the Earth if lined up end to end along the equator. Stacked, they could reach the moon and back more than five times.

There are a whopping 65+ varieties of Oreos that have been made over the years. I say 65+ because I did my best to tally all of them I could find from all the different websites but I can sense there are more that aren’t listed. That is so crazy to me though!

Rather that list all of them, because that would honestly be a little boring with that number of flavors, I wanted to share some of the more interesting and peculiar flavors I saw listed.

  • Blueberry Pie

  • Red Velvet

  • Bacon Cream

  • Caramel Apple

  • Root Beer Float

  • Watermelon

  • And their latest concoction: Swedish Fish

And the list goes on and on…

What will they think of next?? It’ll sure be an adventure to see! Heck, if they are doing bacon Oreos, who knows what else they will come up with.

What is your favorite kind of Oreo? Do you venture much into the different flavors or are you an original kinda person? I love the thin lemon kind, cinnamon bun, and mint. I’d love to hear your favorites in the comments below!
