I Guarantee You’ve Never Tried This With Cantaloupe!

I love spring! Everything looks so bright and fresh and colorful. In addition, there are always killer sales on produce in the spring and summertime. And what’s not to love about fresh, delicious produce at a great price!?

Recently, there was an awesome sale on cantaloupe in my area, so I bought a few. Now, I have no problem eating my weight in fresh, raw cantaloupe ;), but I love trying new recipes and I thought this might be a good opportunity to try one using one of my favorite fruits!

I ran across a recipe that immediately intrigued me and I knew I would have to try. Not only that, but Pie Day was coming up, so it just seemed like it was meant to be- the recipe was Cantaloupe Meringue Pie. Yep- you read that right! Have any of you ever tried it before or even heard of it?? I know I never had;).

For those of you who haven’t tried it before, I think it’s definitely worth a try! It sounds incredibly weird- but it actually totally works. It’s very sweet and it’s hard to pick out the cantaloupe flavor- it just tastes like a yummy custard! It was also my first time making a meringue pie, so I was feeling pretty darn proud of myself ;).

My kids loved it, and I couldn’t get enough of the custard filling. But time for a moment of honesty- my husband was not a big fan. He couldn’t get over the cantaloupe factor. I kind of wish I hadn’t told him what it was before he tried it; I bet if I had just handed him a piece of pie he would have had no qualms about eating it;). Word of advice- serve the pie first and then tell people what it is ;). My husband said it reminded him of sweet potato, which is probably why I liked it so much- I am a huge fan of sweet potato ;). I didn’t think it tasted much like sweet potato, so you’ll have to just decide for yourself when you try it ;).

The other thing to remember- you want to have a really ripe cantaloupe. Like, almost rotten ;). I thought mine was ripe enough, but in hindsight, I should have let it sit for a day or two more. The riper your cantaloupe, the sweeter your pie ;).

I think if I was to make it again, I might just eat the custard part! It was seriously delicious. A little whipped cream and some chopped candied pecans- perfection ;).

So I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you think this is a recipe you would try? If you have tried it before, what did you think? Share in the comments below!
