When is Watermelon season?

Q: For several weeks now, I have been able to purchase Watermelons that are so sweet and juicy; can you tell me when is watermelon season? I didn't think watermelon season came about until August. Thank you.

A: Although watermelon is available year round, domestic watermelon is in its peak season from May through August in the USA. Imported watermelon is in its peak season from March through May.

You are apparently enjoying watermelons shipped in from a warmer climate country and I must agree with you, the ones I have eaten lately are so delicious.

FYI - The U.S. is the leading exporter of watermelon, with most being produced in Texas, Georgia, Florida and California. The sweet fruit travels to other countries like Russia, Bermuda, Japan, Mexico and France. Watermelon originally came to the U.S. from South Africa.

Thanks for asking!
