Pizza Anytime

This past week at DVO one of my coworkers decided that he needed to try out different pizza sauces and dough. He wanted us to be his guinea pigs! This meant we had fresh, handmade pizza almost every day! We even had another coworker bring an outdoor pizza oven. So in honor of our “Pizza Week” I decided to write about the glorious food that is pizza!

I’m not sure that there is any food quite like it! It’s a dish that’s served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can find it at cheap fast food places and at higher end restaurants as well. I wonder what it is that makes pizza so good. It could be its cheesiness, or the fact that you can make it with so many different toppings. Pizza from restaurants is tasty, but making it at home is better. Homemade pizza can be cheaper, it serves as a great activity for families, sleepovers or even a date night. Plus if you’re making your own personal pizzas, everyone has the chance to customize what they want. Below are some ideas for homemade pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’ve also included a basic pizza dough recipe that can be used with all of these ideas

Breakfast Pizza:

Pizza isn’t just for dinner anymore! One of my favorite things to eat is breakfast pizza. If you’re thinking that these pizzas are like others, you’re wrong! Breakfast pizzas are filled with yummy breakfast foods like eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns and cheese!

How do you make this delightful morning treat? Easy just follow the steps below!

  •   1) Choose your crust: You can use the basic pizza dough recipe included below, or you can buy premade dough at the store. I’ve also heard of people using English muffins as crusts for personal pizzas!
  •   2) Choose your toppings: You’ll need some eggs for sure, but the rest of the toppings are optional. If you like bacon add that, or if you like sausage use that, or if you want both add both! Some people like to add shredded potatoes, peppers, or green onions.
  •   3) Assemble and bake: It’s best to first bake the crust a little first (cook using the directions on the package or from the recipe). While that’s happening scramble your eggs, cook the meats, and mix together. Then take the partially baked crust out and spread cheese, and the eggs and meat mixture on top. Bake until the crust is cooked and the cheese is melted. You can add white sauce or country gravy as “sauce” if you’d like.
  •   4) Enjoy!

Let your creativity go wild! A great breakfast pizza can start a day off right!

Lunch/Dinner Pizza:

Golden crust, ooey gooey bites of cheese and sauce, and lots of scrumptious toppings are what make a pizza good. Luckily for us all there are so many styles of pizza that everyone can find one they like! I’ll just list a few options for you!

Pizzas that use red sauce:

  •   Cheese Pizza
  •   Pepperoni/Sausage Pizza
  •   Meat Lovers Pizza
  •   Various other toppings pizza

Pizza that uses other types of sauce:

  •   BBQ Chicken Pizza: this one obviously uses barbecue sauce
  •   Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza: use ranch instead of red sauce
  •   Chicken Alfredo Pizza: use Alfredo sauce
  •   Spinach Artichoke Pizza: uses some sort of white sauce

What’s great about pizza is that you can top it anyway you like. Also you can make pizzas using tortillas and pita bread!

Dessert Pizza:

Yes, there is such a thing as dessert pizza! For dessert your pizza should be a bit sweeter and will generally consist of fruit, chocolate, syrups and other dessert toppings. Here are a few different ideas for you!

For the Crust:

  •   Pizza dough (like the recipe below)
  •   Pie crust
  •   Brownie Mix
  •   Cookie Dough

For the Sauce:

  •   Chocolate sauce (chocolate syrup, ice cream topping, or you can make your own by melting chocolate at home)
  •   Yogurt
  •   Cream Cheese
  •   Whipped Cream
  •   Peanut Butter
  •   Jam/Jelly
  •   Nutella
  •   Frosting

For the Toppings:

  •   Nuts
  •   Candy (M&Ms, Skittles, Swedish Fish, jelly beans, gummy bears, other gummies etc.)
  •   Cookies or cookie crumbs
  •   Fresh sliced fruit (banana slices, kiwi slices, fresh berries, fresh pineapple etc.)
  •   Marshmallows
  •   Spices (like cinnamon for more flavoring)
  •   Really anything you think would taste yummy

Dessert pizzas can be chocolaty or fruity or mixture of both. There is no end to the flavors you can make! These pizzas are great as an activity at sleepovers or as a date night. Dessert pizzas might be so tasty that you won’t want to share!

See you really can have pizza anytime you want! I hope this article has given you some ideas on what to do for your next pizza! If you have any must-try pizza recipes share them below!

Recipe

Quick Basic Pizza Dough

This dough is a cinch -- give it time to rise and a couple of kneads and it's done! You can store it in an oiled bowl, covered with plastic, in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours. Total Time: 10 mins

Ingredients:
2 packets (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for bowl and brushing
2 teaspoons coarse salt
4 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for work surface

Directions:
Step 1: Pour 1 1/2 cups warm water into a large bowl; sprinkle with yeast and let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.

Step 2 : Whisk sugar, oil, and salt into yeast mixture. Add flour and stir until a sticky dough forms. Transfer dough to an oiled bowl and brush top with oil. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draft-free place until dough has doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and gently knead 1 or 2 times before using.
