Ingredients

1/2 cup soft shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup thick sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Butter Icing:
3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1/3 cup butter, softened or melted
about 3 tablespoons cream
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425°. Mix together shortening, sugar, and eggs. Stir in sour cream and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together, and stir into other mixture. Chill at least 1 hour.

Drop rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto lightly greased baking sheet. Bake 8–10 minutes, until lightly browned, and when touched with finger, almost no imprint remains. Frost with Butter Icing when cool.

For Butter Icing:
Combine ingredients until smooth.

There are two clues that this is an old recipe. Did you find them? They are “soft” and “thick”—no need for those adjectives today. All bought vegetable shortening stays soft enough to mix right out of the container. And, unlike homemade that goes through stages, all bought sour cream is “thick.”
