Lots of Old Time Skillet Biscuits

Total Calories: 1,195

Ingredients

8 cups self rising flour
4 teaspoons sugar
2 cups shortening
3 cups milk

Directions:

Mix all dry stuff-cut in the shortening with a fork until it looks like fine crumbs, add milk and mix up just enough to form a dough ball. On work board, pat the dough flat with your hand until dough is 1/2 inch thick-cut out biscuits and place in hot-lightly greased skillet-cook about 4 or 5 min per side-or until golden brown. Back in the old days when folks were traveling light, you would not find many of them carrying heavy Dutch ovens in their saddle bags. They would, however, usually carry a skillet, and a coffee pot. When at camp, they would make their biscuits in the skillet, it was sometimes called skillet bread. These biscuits cook on top the camp fire coals, or camp stove-no Dutch Oven needed. Use a 20” Dutch oven or lid for this recipe.
