What ARE the Best Containers for Freezing Food?

If you just read my article on how to make your freezer more functional, you may have a question or two. One question I had when I first read this research was, “Well, what ARE the best containers for freezing—durable and truly air tight?”

I read many product review articles on the subject, and a couple brands kept popping up. If you’d like to upgrade your leftovers and freezer containers, then read on. The folks at the site, www.foodandwine.com, summed up the collective research. Here’s what reviewers across the country agreed on:

BEST GLASS FOOD STORAGE CONAINERS: Glasslock Assorted Oven Safe Container Set (Amazon $56). Pros—these versatile BPA-free containers can go in the microwave, dishwasher, and oven. Cons—if you tend to cook in bulk, you may want to supplement the set with extra large-capacity pieces.

BEST PLASTIC FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS: Rubbermaid Premier Storage Containers (Amazon $40). Pros—they’re sturdier than many other plastic storage options. Cons—the plastic held on to some odors after hand-washing, and the largest container holds just 5 cups.

BEST VALUE, GLASS FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS: Pyrex Simply Store Glass Food Storage Container Set (Amazon $38). [ALICE: I agree; I’ve been using this set for years.] Pros—the assortment of large and small sizes in this versatile set. Cons—the pieces don’t fully nest inside each other, making them a little bulky to store. [ALICE: I store them with lids on and stacked atop each other that way, but then, I have a deep drawer that accommodates this approach.]

BEST VALUE, PLASTIC FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS: SALE Rubbermaid Brilliance Food Storage Container Set (Amazon $40, now $32). Pros—these crystal-clear containers have secure snap-on lids and an inexpensive price. Cons—the set includes one extra-large container, but the rest are fairly small.

BEST REUSABLE FOOD STORAGE BAGS: Stasher Silicone Food Storage Bag Starter Bundle (Amazon $66, Target $55)). Pros—these silicone bags are extremely versatile and durable. Cons—they’re rather difficult to clean, and fairly expensive per-piece.
