The Ultimate Comfort Food Just Got Better!

We all have those days where you just need to pause from all the responsibilities and stresses of being an adult, and indulge in some tasty treats and comfort foods. It’s hard to say if there is a comfort food that can beat macaroni n’ cheese. As a kid, we probably all grew up with the boxed basic stuff, and maybe even went through a phase where we were sick of this “little kid” food. But, eventually we all come around again and realize that macaroni n’ cheese just makes things better sometimes ;).

But, we are adults now. Which means that maybe a box of 33 cent Macaroni n’ Cheese isn’t quite going to cut it anymore. But that’s where the fun part of adulthood comes in- you can make your own masterpiece mac n’ cheese, and you can make it whatever you want it to be! There are so many recipes for homemade mac n’ cheese out there, but here are a few basic ways to twist any recipe to really make it the ultimate comfort food!

*Meat. I think for most guys, there’s got to be a meat in their meal for it to count as comfort food ;). And you can vary the flavor and style of your homemade mac depending on which meat you go for! Pulled pork could help make a delicious BBQ version, or you could stick with basic chicken or shredded beef. And of course, bacon. You can never go wrong with bacon. ;)

*Add a vegetable. Some may not think this really goes with the comfort food idea, but honestly, a little veggie never killed anyone ;), and it can really add some unique flavors to your pasta! Spinach, mushrooms, diced bell pepper, or even a few green onions can add some extra nutrients as well as some incredible flavor!

*Vary your cheeses. When we think mac n’ cheese, we probably think Velveeta cheese or a cheddar sauce, but try going an alfredo/parmesan route, or experiment with several melted cheeses (e.g. gouda, asiago, swiss). You can create several very different dishes just by changing up your cheese!

*Breaded crumbs or French-fried onions. Sometimes just a little extra crunch is all you need to take your dish to the next level! You could even add croutons or top with Doritos if you feel the need ;).

*Add more cheese ;). When in doubt, loading the shredded cheese on top of your mac n’ cheese dish is always a good choice ;). Does anything scream comfort food louder than a spoonful of pasta dripping with stretchy cheese??

*Switch up your noodles. Ok, so technically it’s macaroni n’ cheese, but who says you have to stick with that?? Penne, bowtie, or especially ravioli or gnocchi would make incredible substitutes for your delicious bowl of comfort food!

*Spice it up. Don’t just stick with salt and pepper! Try nutmeg, cumin, chili powder, or Italian seasoning to give your dish a unique flavor. Fresh herbs are always a great addition too- fresh basil or rosemary would be divine!

So let’s hear it- your ultimate bowl of mac n’ cheese, what would it include? What cheeses and ingredients would be a must for you? I’d love to hear them!
