5 Crazy Things to do with Watermelon

Watermelon is one of those things that, without, summer just doesn’t feel complete. It’s got that cool and refreshing taste and crisp texture that goes great with any summer outing. Whether it be a picnic, barbecue, or even just sitting out on the porch with a slice in hand, watermelon hits the spot.

It got me thinking, what else can you do with a watermelon? We usually eat it by the slice (and have piece after piece. Which is totally fine because it’s so good for you! It’s one of those wonderful objects that happen to taste like candy while having all the properties of healthy food.) But slice after slice, though tasty, may get monotonous if you have it all throughout the summer.

Not that we can really get bored with watermelon, but what if we did try something new? Just to shake it up.

Here are 5 Crazy things to do with your watermelon:

Scoop it up:

This can be done in two ways. One way is to still just serve the watermelon by the slice, and then scoop up some scrumptious sherbet to go along with it. Turn it into a dessert! The other meaning of “scoop it up” is to literally grab an ice cream scoop and serve it in scoops. I do this often. Why? It saves me a ton of clean up and hassle. Rather than pulling out the huge cutting board and trying to cut that big old thing, with juice going all over the table, I just cut the watermelon in half and scoop out the circles. Place it in a bowl and you have a fun, attractive way to serve watermelon without the rind, and without having to cut a million little pieces. You’re watermelon half is the ice-cream carton. Scoop it clean.

Grow it square:

I had never seen this before. Grow your watermelon in a polycarbonate plastic box, and it will cone out square! That would be a lot easier to cut; it wouldn’t be rolling around. But it also looks amazing. People would love it. You could even gift it.

Watermelon carving contest:

If you think about it, there are 100s of ways to carve a watermelon. Do it for birthday parties, family outings, or just for fun! You can carve it out, or carve into it. I’ve seen sharks, tigers, roses, cars. You could do a boat, a pig, and so on and so forth.

Nails

So this is more so aimed to the ladies, and you don’t use an actual watermelon. But how fun are these! What a great way to be into the festivity of summer in a colorful way. I don’t know if I’m skilled enough to make them look that good, but if you got a friend to help do your dominant hand I’m sure it would be possible.

Watermelon juice/popsicle

A great way to get all the flavor in a different fashion. If drinking it seems too weird, try freezing it into popsicles. All ages would love it. It’s a popsicle! A great, healthy way to cool down and revitalize you’re energy with good nutrients. I’ve included a recipe for watermelon juice below.

Have fun with your watermelon this summer, and try something new!

Watermelon Juice

Author: Cookie and Kate Total Time: 10 mins

Prep time:
Cook time:
Yield: 4

Serving size: 4
Calories per serving: 485

Ingredients:
1 small, sweet watermelon about 6 pounds
1 small lime, juiced

Directions:
Slice the watermelon in half. Assuming your watermelon isn't seedless, slice the halves into smaller strips and use a small spoon to scoop out the seeds. Discard the seeds, and scoop chunks of watermelon from the rind into the blender. If the watermelon is seedless, use a big spoon to scoop chunks of watermelon flesh into the blender. Discard the rind.

Blend the watermelon until it is totally pulverized. This shouldn't take more than a minute. Squeeze the juice of one small lime into the blender and blend for a few seconds. Pour the watermelon juice into a pitcher or pour directly into glasses, over ice.
