Can I make cake frosting with granulated sugar?

Here's a recipe using granulated sugar for a 7-minute frosting that I love. I like the microwave version to minimize summer heat stroke over the cooking stove!

Desiri Wightman, R.D.

7-Minute Frosting

Ingredients:
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup light karo syrup
2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 egg whites

Directions:
Combine in microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 3 1/2 minutes on high. In separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff. Pour microwaved sugar mixture slowly over egg whites. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and beat until frosting reaches the desired consistency.
