"Save Me, I'm Browning!" (Saving Your Fruits)

By Sydney Hill

We all know fruits and veggies that have browned are edible, but look extremely unappetizing. So, too save our appetites, here are some tips to keeping our foods looking healthy and fresh.

Apples, Pears, Bananas, etc.

For those fruits that brown when sliced, put them in a bowl with acidic fruit juice (such as lemon or pineapple). This also gives them a good flavor. However, if you would prefer a more natural flavor, use Sprite. Its taste isn't as strong as pineapple or lemon. Also, Diet Sprite is more acidic and therefore more effective.

Once the fruits are covered in the juice, they are free to sit out as they please. They do not have to stay in the bowl.

Avocado

Although adding lemon or lime juice can help avocados from browning (and it can make a mean and tasty guacamole), if you simply keep it with the pit, it will last longer. If you have a bowl of guacamole, just keep the pits in the bowl (Feel free to explain to everyone what you are doing to prevent weird looks).

Potatoes

Potatoes turn pink and brown when they hit air because they oxidize. When you cut potatoes, simply keep them in a pot of water. Simple, but helpful.
