The Perfect Ham and Cheese Breakfast Casserole

For some reason, this always seems to happen to me that I find the perfect recipe to share with you guys for an event that just passed. I found the perfect breakfast casserole that would have been fantastic for Easter just a few days too late. No big deal! Even though we associate all things ham with Easter meals, who doesn’t love a good ham and cheese dish any old time?

This ham and cheese strata, (which is essentially an egg casserole), is perfect for any lunch,  breakfast or dinner all year round. It would be a great one to keep in your repertoire for the big holidays like Christmas or Easter because you can make it up to a couple days in advance, and it will actually turn out even better for sitting in the fridge for a day or two for the flavors to meld together even more.

The reason I love this casserole is that it is the perfect way to use up things that get stale around here. If you’ve got an old, stale loaf of bread that nobody seems to be too keen on using to make PB&J’s, feel free to use up 12 of those slices for this dish. It is also perfect if you often find yourself with half a package of ham lunch meat to use up (or leftovers from a big holiday ham)--you can easily chop that up and put it in this casserole.

It is buttery, savory, filling, is super easy to make and has staples you likely already have on hand. This recipe is pretty basic with just ham and cheese, but feel free to add on things like onions, garlic, or bacon to get all the flavors you are wanting in a dish like this.

What is a Strata?

You might be wondering what the difference is between a strata and a frittata? A strata is a dish made up of layers that often consist of bread, eggs, cheese and possibly even meat or vegetables. The egg mixture is poured over the layers of other ingredients and it has to rest for a long period of time to set up and be ready for baking. A frittata, on the other hand, is an unfolded Italian omelet with all the ingredients cooked on top. So they are really quite different and I think you are going to be “team strata” after making this breakfast casserole!
