Art in the Kitchen

Are you ready for Halloween? Need something to help you get in the Halloween spirit? Check out these incredible cakes!

A recent fascination of mine has been cake decorating. I’ve been making my children’s cakes for years, ever since my oldest’s first birthday. One, it’s so much cheaper to make it on my own than to pay someone else. And especially when kids are young- they really don’t care as long as they get to eat tasty cake!

But second, it’s something I really do find joy in! It’s such a fun way to be creative. I think I find so much joy in it because it’s a functional hobby. Instead of creating a bunch of things that might lie around the house forever and collect dusts, cakes are something that can be eaten, shared- enjoyed! There’s always birthdays, baby showers, reasons to celebrate! Cake is always something needed- there will always be an excuse to make cake!

Recently, I’ve been seeking to expand my horizon a little and improve my cake decorating skills. Obviously that’s going to come from lots and LOTS of practice, but I think there is something to watching these self-taught masters at work as well! I came across this video and was mesmerized! It’s so fun to see the process that goes into some of these incredible cakes. A lot of patience and fine motor skills, for sure! It’s also fun to see some of the tricks that go into creating these various looks- parchment paper, sprayed food coloring, cut-outs, spatulas, icing combs, paintbrushes- it really is an art form!

I also love seeing how creative people can be. The different themes are so fun, and these are just a couple! I follow quite a few different cake artists on social media and it’s so fun to see the creativity! These cake decorators are truly artists. And it’s so fun to see the various ways they express themselves! Of course, cake is not the only art form- but it’s one of my favorites, and one that I’m trying to improve in.

Is there a skill in the kitchen that you consider an art form? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
