Crockpot Apple Dump Cake

There is nothing I love more, especially in the winter, than using the crockpot and cooking stuff low and slow. I absolutely love having the aroma of whatever yummy dish I am making fill the air all day. My go-to for the crockpot are usually soups or just cooking meat low and slow like a roast or turkey breast, but I made my very first dessert out of the crockpot the other day and could not have been more thrilled with this discovery! And this is about the EASIEST dessert you could ever possibly make! May I introduce you to the delicious, perfectly moist, one and only apple dump cake. Talk about wonderful aromas from the crockpot all day! This takes that to a whole new level.

Now I know some of you may be thinking that you don't love apple pie or cooked apples. I know, I've been there. I know the kind you are talking about: rubbery, dry, crunchy-but-cooked apples. Yuck! These are nothing like that. They are cooked absolutely perfectly in the crockpot so I dare you to give this a try if you are not an apple pie fan and see if you like this. I am certain you will! It might seem unusual there is no liquid in this recipe for a "cake". But have no fear, you do not need to make a batter with the cake mix. You sprinkle it over the top like a crumble, then top with butter. The butter will melt, the juices from the apples will bubble up, and the cake mix will cook. It is magic!

They are absolutely divine topped with ice cream or whipped cream. I'm talking the good stuff. Real whipped cream, not Cool Whip! One time when I was a newlywed and wanted nothing but the best for my new hubby, I hand whisked cream for 20 MINUTES until it turned into whipped cream! Muscles were sore I never knew existed after this experience :) Now, you don't need to go to these lengths for this dessert because even the cake alone will speak for itself! I hope you enjoy it! Let me know of any other crockpot desserts I should try in the comments below.

CROCKPOT APPLE DUMP CAKE

yield: 8-10 SERVINGS

Just a few ingredients and a crockpot make this one of the easiest apple desserts! Set it and forget it...until dessert!

INGREDIENTS:

· 5-7 Granny Smith Apples

· 1/4 cup granulated sugar

· 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, divided

· 1 box yellow cake mix

· 1/2 cup oats (quick cook or old-fashioned)

· 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, sliced

DIRECTIONS:

1. Peel, core, and slice your apples. I used 7 because mine were small. If you're using large, you can use less. Apples should be thin and bite sized.

2. Spray crockpot with cooking spray.

3. Place apples in the bottom of your crockpot. Sprinkle with sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.

4. Place the cake mix in a large bowl. Add the oats and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Stir, then sprinkle over the top of the apples.

5. Drop slices of the butter over the top of the cake mix.

6. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours. (My crockpot defaults to HIGH power for 4 hours. As you can see, it got a little dark around the edges, so if you have a "low" setting, you can try that instead.) Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.

NOTES:

This is a sweet recipe - it's sweet from the cake mix and from the apples. Because I used granny smith, I added some sugar to the apples, but if your sweet meter is lower than mine, you can omit the sugar.
