Notes from Folks

Hi Cook'n!
I am headed to a cabin in the Yellowstone area and we want to cook a lot of our meals around the campfire. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your answers!

  • A blazing fire will warm you up on a chilly evening, but for cooking, it's best to let your firewood burn down to coals. They'll cook more evenly and you won't have to worry as much about scorching.
  • An oven grate makes a handy grill to place over your fire. You can wrap it in non-stick foil to make cooking a little easier. Be sure to poke some holes in the foil to allow for more heat and the smoky flavor of the fire to come through. With one of these in place, almost anything you can cook on your grill becomes a campfire meal!
  • Wrapping your dinner in foil? Cut potatoes and root veggies in smaller pieces and leave your meat in larger pieces...this way, they'll be ready to enjoy at the same time. Double-wrapped in foil and sealed up tight, they'll be ready to cook. Don't forget a little water inside to help them steam.
  • If your dinner is prepped and you still have big logs burning, you can carefully move them to the outside of the ring or break them up into smaller coals before adding a cooking grate or foil packets. If it's chilly, you can move them to one side and cook on the other.
