New Uses for the Humble Potato

By Patty Liston

Do you have a 10lb bag of potatoes that you don't know what to do with? Have you sworn off eating potatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Have your glorious spuds begun to sprout long tendrils that resemble something from the movie, "The Alien". Don't throw them away! Here are some other uses for the humble potato that you may not have heard before.

Flower arrangements - Do you want your flowers to stay upright without flower foam? Cut a large potato in half and place the flat side on the bottom of the vase. Use a skewer or ice pick to poke some holes for the stems and arrange away!

Wrapping Paper Stamp - Are you going to a last minute party and don't have any wrapping paper? Here is a clever idea for you to try. Just cut a potato in half, scrape out a quick pattern and dip it in paint. Then, press your "stamp" on to plain colored paper to create a home-made masterpiece!

Remove rust - A cut potato is the perfect texture for scrubbing rust off cast iron, baking pans or gardening tools. Acid in the potato dissolves the rust, and adding soap or salt increases the cleaning power. This is especially great for kitchen jobs where using toxic rust removers could be harmful.

Hot/cold compress - Long ago, women would put hot baked potatoes into their cloak pockets to keep their hands warm on long winter carriage rides. Turns out, potatoes hold their temperature (hot or cold) for a really long time so, in a pinch, a frozen potato can be a great icepack alternative. (That is if you don't have a handy bag of frozen beans or peas!)

Remove tarnish - Potato water contains a residue that can get rid of tarnish. After boiling your dinner, try soaking tarnished silverware in the water for an hour, and then simply wash as usual to make it good as new.

Headache - When I was pregnant with my second child I got terrible headaches. A friend suggested eating a baked potato. Or you can slice a raw potato and rub it on your temples to get some much needed relief!

Heartburn - To quell annoying heart-burn, just shave some raw potato on to a plate and eat it!

Over-Salted Foods - If you soup tastes a little salty, drop in large chunks of potato. In about 5 -10 minutes they will have absorbed the excess salt and your soup will be delicious!

Berry Stains - Rub a piece of raw potato on stains to remove. If the stain is set it, dip the cut potato into lemon juice before rubbing.
