Sliced Beef en Gelee: White House

Ingredients

6 slices cold cooked roast beef or pot roast
1/2 teaspoon thyme
carrot slices
2 (10 3/4-ounce) cans condensed beef consommé
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon basil
green pepper slices
2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
cayenne pepper
freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

Arrange overlapping slices of beef in a shallow serving dish. Sprinkle with thyme, basil, salt, and black pepper. Garnish with carrot and green peppers. Soften gelatin in 1/2 cup of cold water. Bring 1 can consommé to a boil and add it to the gelatin, stirring until gelatin is dissolved. Add the remaining 1 can of cold consommé, 1 cup of cold water, Worcestershire sauce, and a few grains of cayenne pepper. Cool for 30 minutes or until gelatin mixture is syrupy. Pour the mixture over the beef slices and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or until gelatin is set.
