Ingredients

1 cup lye
1 quart water
5 pounds grease, about 1-2/3 large-size cans Crisco shortening
1/4 cup ammonia
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
3 tablespoons borax
1/2 cup water

Directions:

Dissolve lye in water. Warm grease. Mix ammonia, salt, sugar, borax, and water add to warm grease. Add grease mixture to lye water and stir 1/2 hour to 45 minutes until mixture is like honey. (It sets up quickly.) Cut into bars in 45 minutes to an hour--or let stand overnight. It is then hard enough to grind at one's convenience.
