Ingredients

1 cup flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ toasted
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup brown sugar packed
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoons orange rinds grated
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Granulated or colored sugar (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly grease baking sheets.

In a medium bowl, stir all-purpose and whole wheat flours, wheat germ, baking powder and salt set aside.

In a large mixer bowl at medium speed, beat brown sugar and butter until well blended. At low speed, beat in half of the flour mixture until well blended. Add milk, orange rind and vanilla. Beat until well blended, scraping bowl several times. Add remaining flour mixture and beat until well mixed. Divide dough in half. If dough is too sticky to roll, chill for 30 minutes.

On a lightly floured surface, roll one portion of dough at a time to about 1/8 -inch thickness. Dip cutters in flour and cut cookies. Place cookies about 1 inch apart on baking sheets. Lightly sprinkle with sugar if not decorating after baking.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until edges are firm to the touch and light brown. Cool cookies on wire racks.

Decorate if desired. If frosted, store loosely covered otherwise, store in an airtight container in a cool place.
