Baking soda is a leavening agent used to make cakes, cookies, donuts, and other baked goods. It is made from salted water containing ammonia. Carbon dioxide is added to the ammonia, salt water to create a compound called sodium bicarbonate. This solid settles to the bottom of the water mixture and is then filtered out, washed in cold water, dried, and ground into the fine white powder we know as baking soda.
