Ingredients

5 cups flour sifted
2 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
5 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 3/4 cups milk
5 large eggs
20 large apples

Directions:

Sift dry ingredients together. Add milk and egg. Beat well. Peel and core apples, then slice apples into ¼” thick rings.

Dip rings into batter and drop into a 16” or 20” Dutch oven with 2” to 2 ½” hot 375° melted shortening. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 1 ½ minutes each side. You may need to flip rings over half way through cooking to fry both sides.

Drain on a cake cooling rack or paper towels. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar over the top of fritters and serve hot.
